Hacker 'handshake' hole found in common firewalls

NSS Labs recently tested half a dozen network firewalls to evaluate security weaknesses, and all but one of them was found to be vulnerable to a type of attack called the "TCP Split Handshake Attack" that lets a hacker remotely fool the firewall into thinking an IP connection is a trusted one behind the firewall.

This week NSS Labs published its "Network Firewall 2011 Comparative Test Results" research paper about the findings. NSS Labs is a well-known product testing organization that evaluates a wide range of security gear, sometimes as vendor-sponsored comparative tests, sometimes as completely independent tests under its own determination. The Network Firewall 2011 Comparative Test published this week is in the latter category, where costs were assumed wholly by NSS Labs itself.

New services unlock iPhones 4, 3GS without jailbreaking

For many iPhone owners, a big reason to stage a jailbreak is to unlock the device, thus allowing it to work with carriers other than AT&T. (In the U.S., "carriers" means T-Mobile.)

Now, at least two services are promising to unlock any iPhone 3G, 3GS, or 4 without the need to jailbreak. What's more, they can do it remotely.

For a price.

Cut Your Sim and GSM Phone Source charge $169.99 and $179.99, respectively, for remote iPhone unlocking. In both cases you supply your phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, then wait a couple days for an e-mail confirming that the process is complete. It's that simple.

According to Cut Your Sim, this is a "permanent" unlocking solution, requiring no jailbreaking or warranty voiding: "The unlock will work with any iPhone version, and any base band version; no need to worry about updating to the latest version anymore, your phone will be unlocked forever!"

How does it work? Well - Apple has a database already which they query when you do a sync in iTunes to check your devices lock status. That's how it works if you call your carrier and they unlock the device for you - you sync in iTunes and it is unlocked. There is a source wholesaling remote unlocks, and many in the industry suddenly today picked up the ability to do this. It would seem someone with access to this db is basically selling that access - as far as my research shows, everyone who is selling this is getting it from the same source. This could be totally sanctioned and legit, or this service may just as suddenly stop being available one day (although once you've been unlocked you'll be so forever).

The card comes from Rebel SIM Card and will allow you to load any sim you want into your iPhone 4. It comes in two flavors:

The cheaper option has an tiny antenna that awkwardly sticks out the side. But for around $17 more, you can get a sim special tray that replaces the one that comes with your iPhone.

The cheaper card will cost you around $48 USD and the SIM tray replacement will cost around $65 USD.

How To Unlock Your iPhone For Any Carrier Without Jailbreaking

A new service claims it can unlock your iPhone 4 to run on any carrier without jailbreaking your device.

It works by adjusting your phone's IMEI to work on any carrier. An IMEI is a number unique to every GSM phone that allows your carrier to identify your device

if you really want to unlock your phone to work on any GSM carrier such as AT&T or T-Mobile. (It'll also work with many international carriers).

When you sign up for the service, you provide them with your phone's IMEI. They'll email you within 48 hours to confirm your phone has been unlocked. After another sync with iTunes, you can then insert any GSM sim card into your iPhone.

One caveat though: there's always a chance Apple can put your IMEI back in the registry and negate the whole process, so use this service at your own risk.
